The Emergency Department (E.D.) at Clarinda Regional Health Center (CRHC) is here for you in the moments that matter. In an emergency, a single second can affect an entire lifetime. Our E.D. medical professionals are ready to provide you with the fast, expert care at a moment’s notice, and we are equipped to stabilize your immediate needs, from broken bones to industrial accidents.


A Team of Lifesavers

Our compassionate and knowledgeable emergency staff are ready for life’s medical emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The E.D. is staffed by a physician or a mid-level provider, with a physician on-call, around the clock. Our E.D. staff is experienced caregivers with advanced training and certifications in:

â–º  Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)

â–º   Pediatric advanced life support (PALS)
â–º   Advanced cardiac life support (ACLS)
â–º   Neonatal resuscitation (NRP)
â–º   Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE)
â–º   S.T.A.B.L.E. Certification for neonatal stabilization and care of sick infants



Your Comfort  

 Our E.D. are designed around patient comfort and service. Our registration staff admits you to the E.D. quickly so you can begin healing as soon as possible. With strong collaboration among all hospital departments, you can expect the highest level of medical expertise delivered with the utmost care.


The E.D. at CRHC is a Level IV Trauma Center and equipped with all the necessary facilities for ever-changing environments:

â–º Negative Pressure Room

â–º Two large, fully equipped trauma rooms with tele-medicine services by Avera eEmergency

â–º Three E.D. exam rooms

â–º Decontamination Shower

â–º Drive through garage with direct access to the E.D. for ambulance services

â–º More improvements to come – construction projects to begin in the near future!

You should call 911 or get to the nearest emergency room if you have any of the following symptoms:


â–º  Chest pain                                              â–º Weakness

â–º Seizure                                                    â–º Stiffness in your neck

â–º Trouble breathing                                 â–º Dizziness   

â–º Bad stomach pain                                 â–º Numbness

â–º Blurred vision                                        â–º A bite/sting

â–º  Bad headache                                       â–º If you are pregnant



You should call 911 or get to the nearest emergency room if you have any of the following symptoms:

â–º High or ongoing fever

â–º Child is very drowsy; you cannot wake the child

â–º Child is not acting like himself/herself

â–º Child is under the care of a doctor for a serious condition

â–º  If you believe the child needs to be seen by a doctor right away


You should call 911 or go straight to the emergency room if you feel that you might hurt yourself or someone else.

  • What does 24-hour coverage mean?

    At CRHC our Emergency Department is staffed with providers and support staff that is physically present 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year. 

  • When should I go to the emergency room?

    CRHC’s Emergency Department is a is a Level IV Trauma Center, which means it’s prepared to treat all types of emergencies by any patients who request care. The decision to use the E.D. can only be made by the patient or legal guardian. Some of the reasons you might visit the E.D. could be, but are not limited to:

    • Difficulty breathing, shortness of breath
    • Chest or upper abdominal pain or pressure
    • Fainting, sudden dizziness, weakness
    • Changes in vision
    • Confusion or changes in mental status
    • Any sudden, severe pain
    • Uncontrolled bleeding
    • Severe or persistent vomiting or diarrhea
    • Coughing or vomiting blood
    • Suicidal feelings
    • Difficulty speaking
    • Unusual abdominal pain
  • How do I get to CRHC's Emergency Room?

  • Can I call the Emergency Department to receive medical advice?

    We apologize, but CRHC’s Emergency Department does not give medical advice over the phone.

  • Can the Emergency Department help me establish a relationship with a private physician?

    The E. D. can give you a list of primary care providers and options for follow up care. 

  • Can I receive follow up care from the provider I saw in the Emergency Department?

    The providers that work in CHRC’s E.D. are designated to care for our E.D. patients only and do not see patients in our clinic settings. Upon discharging you from your initial E.D. visit you will be given follow up care options. 

  • If medication is prescribed with my Emergency Department visit, will CRHC fill that prescription?

    Depending on individual patient needs, you may be given an initial dose of needed medication as part of your E.D. visit. However, your prescription must be filled at a retail pharmacy. Learn more about area pharmacys.
