Radiology/Mammography

Radiology

Clarinda Regional Health Center’s (CRHC) Radiology Department is available 24/7 and has a board-certified Radiologist on-call 24/7 utilizing the latest technology in image viewing. Our technologists are nationally registered in CT, MRI, and Digital Mammography. CRHC also has team members licensed in Vascular imaging able to assist physicians in diagnosing circulatory disorders of the neck, abdomen, arms and legs. We meet all state and federal standards for licensure and provide the following services for our community:

3D Mammography

Early detection saves lives! CRHC offers state-of-the-art 3D & 2D mammography. 3D mammography is being called the single greatest breakthrough in breast cancer detection in 30 years! CRHC offers a Hologic Selenia Dimensions 3D mammography system with Genius technology. This system boasts a 5-year breast cancer survival rate of nearly 100 percent when early detection is made and also reduces the number of necessary callbacks by as much as 40 percent. A Genius exam includes both 2D and 3D images. 3D mammograms are 41% more likely to detect invasive breast cancer than traditional two-dimensional mammograms.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

At CRHC we offer an in-house MRI service. The organs and tissues in the body can be captured in great detail with this medical imaging approach. CRHC offers a high-field, short bore MRI service that allows the patients head to be outside the unit depending on the body part being scanned.  We offer high-quality scans with our 1.5 Tesla MRI. Our short bore MRI's advanced design not only accommodates patients of different sizes, but it also serves patients who typically suffer from claustrophobia with other MRI’s. An MRI is a less intrusive method that your doctor can use to assess your skeletal system, organs, and tissue.

MRIs can be done on different parts of the body and are especially useful for looking at soft tissues and the nervous system:

  Brain & spinal cord

  Blood vessels

 Other internal organs

 Bones & joints

MRI machine

Computed Tomography (CT)

CRHC’s new, state-of-the-art CT machine is a Canon Aquilion Prime SP 160 slice scanner. In comparison to previous CT scanners, this machine provides our Radiology Team with higher-quality images and provides a better patient experience because it is faster, quieter, and emits less radiation. CT scanners can distinguish between bone, tissue, fat, gas, and fluid for clear results that help your provider diagnose the problem and prescribe an appropriate course of treatment. Results from a CT Scan at CRHC are sent to your provider within 48 hours of your visit. Studies are read by a board-certified radiologist.

CT scans can be used to detect and diagnose:

CT Scanner

    Back problems

    Trauma

    Blood clots

    Brain Tumors

    Cancer

    Stroke

Common CT Scans offered:

    Abdomen/Pelvis

    Calcium Scoring

    Sinus

    Lumbar Spine

    Head

    And more

Low Dose CT (LDCT) Scans for Lung Cancer:

This beneficial screening can be performed right here at CRHC. This screening tool can be very beneficial, for those who qualify, in catching lung cancer early. The CDC recommends yearly lung cancer screening with LDCT for those patients who:

Have a 20 pack-year or more smoking history

Smoke now or have quite within the past 15 years, and

are between 50 and 80 years old.

Not sure if you qualify? Check out the Lung Cancer Screening worksheet to help you calculate your "pack years" and be sure to talk to your provider about this tool and receiving a LDCT at your next visit.

Check out this helpful informational handout about LDCTs and getting screening at Clarinda Regional Health Center.

Bone Density & Body Composition Scanning

DEXA Body Composition Scanner

CRHC’s Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) scanner from Hologic uses low dosage x-rays to measure how many grams of calcium and other bone materials are packed into a segment of bone. If you have some of the following risk factors, we encourage you to discuss the need for a bone density screening with your provider.

Risk Factors Include:

    Post Menopausal

    History of fractures

    Rheumatoid Arthritis

    Parathyroid disease

    Smoking

    Low body weight

We can use the same Horizon DXA system from Hologic to scan the body to get a precise assessment, including body fat, lean mass, bone mass and more. You can use these results if you’re a student-athlete looking to target specific areas or are recovering from an injury/surgery and want to compare how the muscles recover post-surgery or post-injury. You might also be recommended this scan if you’re on a weight-loss journey so you can compare your transformation from beginning to end.

Body Composition Assessment includes:

    Body Fat

    Lean Mass

    Body Mass

    Visceral Fat

    Fat Mass Index

    And more

Here is more information on the results of Dexa Body Composition or download this simple handout about the DXA

Learn More about our Radiology Department

  • Diagnostic Radiology (better known as X-ray)

CRHC’s commitment to quality healthcare is demonstrated by our state-of-the-art Digital Radiography. All x-rays are digitally captured and viewed through computers with high-resolution monitors.

  • Digital Fluoroscopy

All special procedures such as upper and lower GI studies are imaged digitally and viewed through a computer. Digital Video Swallowing Function studies can be performed in conjunction with our in-house Speech Therapist.

  • Ultrasound

We can take care of all your ultrasound imaging needs with the latest technology right here in Clarinda! Our sonographers are nationally registered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS).

  • Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear medicine is a specialized area of radiology that uses very small amounts of radioactive materials to examine organ function and structure. Nuclear imaging enables visualization of organ and tissue structure as well as function.

We provide In-house service in partnership with DMS Health. No going outside in the rain and snow for your study in a truck. We can provide all types of nuclear scanning with state-of-the-art Siemens equipment. Currently, Nuclear Medicine is available weekly on Mondays.

  • Mobile PET/CT

This relatively new modality that fuses Nuclear Medicine images with CT images has become an important tool in the staging and diagnosis of some cancers. Currently, this service is provided by Shared Medical Services and available on an as-needed basis.
